We started trekking at 9 o’clock. The rain was very heavy. The entire group was filled with enthusiasm. Right at the beginning of the trek, we had to cross the Pimpri Dam on foot. Holding each other’s hands on the wall of the dam with swift flowing water, we slowly moved forward, attempting unsuccessfully to avoid being pushed down by the fast-flowing water. The road ahead was somewhat easier for a while.
The mountains of the Tamhini Range were lush green. Despite the rain, the beautiful mountains and cascading waterfalls looked enchanting in the lap of nature. After trekking for some time, dense jungle began. Due to the rain, there was heavy fog in the dense forests, reducing visibility significantly. This is why the trek is called Andharban Trek (Dark Forest Trek). Crossing fallen trees in the jungle, we proceeded on muddy paths.
Despite the natural environment, fatigue was nowhere to be found. Some paths were flat and easy to walk on, but at times we had to pass near cliffs where our breath would halt. However, all of this enhances our self-confidence.
After approximately 4 hours of trekking, reaching the highest point offered a breathtaking view. The distant spread of the Kundalika Valley and numerous cascading waterfalls descending from the mountains presented a magnificent spectacle. Everyone took many photos here. From this vantage point, Bhira Dam was also visible, where Tata’s power project is located. The water from Bhira Dam could be seen spreading into the valley from afar.
After stopping for a while, it was time for us to descend back down. Due to the extensive walking, everyone started feeling very hungry. After descending for some time, nestled in the foothills of the mountains was a small village where we had lunch sitting in the school courtyard.
After having lunch, we continued further ahead. A short distance ahead, we saw a large waterfall cascading down from the rocky cliffs of the mountains. This waterfall flows over smooth rocks for a while before plunging into a gorge below. Here, everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly, playing and splashing in the water. After a refreshing bath in the water, all tiredness vanished completely.
We didn’t realize when an hour passed by in these activities. Now, we quickly descended towards our destination where our bus was waiting to take us back to Pune. After changing into dry clothes and taking our seats on the bus, we relaxed for the journey home.
The evening began to descend as we headed back. There was some tiredness during the return journey, but completing our first trek successfully brought immense satisfaction. This trek taught me a lot. It significantly diminished the fears within me. I realized that mental strength is as crucial as physical strength, if not more. Confidence and belief in myself increased. I also learned that nature is not only beautiful and magnificent but also tests your patience, confidence, and discipline at every step.
Getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life and spending time in these natural surroundings proved to be very enriching. Everyone should go trekking to connect not only with nature but also with themselves, to test their own abilities. I believe there might not be a better place than the Western Ghats for monsoon trekking.
