Trekking to Devkund Waterfall

Devkund Waterfall is located near Bhira Village in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The Kundalika River originates from the Devkund waterfall itself. A dam has also been built here, known as Bhira Dam, to generate electricity. This place is approximately 110 kilometers from Pune and about 125 kilometers from Mumbai. Situated amidst the Sahyadri Hills, between the Tamhini Ghats, Devkund Waterfall is a very beautiful place for trekking enthusiasts. The trek from Bhira Village to Devkund Waterfall is about 4-5 kilometers and can be completed in 2 to 3 hours.

On a rainy morning, we set out from Pune with our friends for Bhira Village. The route is blessed with natural scenery. Driving through the mountains of Tamhini Ghats from Mulshi Dam, our car kept moving forward. Numerous small and large waterfalls were flowing alongside the road, where people stopped their cars to enjoy the views. After a journey of about 4 hours by car, relishing the beautiful roads, we reached Bhira Village. Bhira Village is the starting point of the Devkund Waterfall trek. After walking some distance on the road from Bhira, the jungle begins.

The jungle here is very dense, and due to the monsoon season, the rain was pouring heavily. Walking on the rugged paths of the jungle floor has its own unique charm. The entire trek to Devkund Waterfall is quite adventurous. There are climbs in some places and descents in others. Along the way, one also has to cross streams of water flowing through the forests.

At some places, we had to cross even strong currents of water. Villagers had tied ropes on the banks to help everyone cross the river. At one point, there was also a wooden bridge that was shaking vigorously when walked upon. Experiencing these thrilling moments was very enjoyable. We were completely drenched in the rain.

The entire area around was filled with awe-inspiring sights. It was amazing to see the rows of waterfalls cascading down from the distant mountains. After about 3 hours of trekking, we reached near Devkund Waterfall. The last few minutes of the journey were a bit challenging.

We had to descend down into the valley with the help of large rocks to reach where Devkund Waterfall was located. After some time, we finally reached our destination, Devkund Waterfall. It was a very large waterfall. Water from the waterfall, falling from a height of about 80 feet, was collecting in a large pool, creating big waves. Near this waterfall, there is also a small temple.

Slowly, we made our way through the large boulders and reached the pool. Due to the heavy rainfall, Devkund Waterfall looked mesmerizing, but the strong flow of water also seemed a bit intimidating. We descended into the pool and began to enjoy the waterfall. However, standing still in the pool was becoming difficult due to the strong waves. The pool is quite deep in the middle, so using ropes to go further ahead was restricted.

The villagers were alert, blowing whistles to warn people to stay away from the strong waves. After some playful moments, it was time to return to Bhira Village through the trek where our car was parked. The weather was quite chilly, and we were completely drenched. At such times, nothing could be better than hot tea and Maggi. We stopped to sit amidst nature and enjoyed some snacks and hot beverages.

After a few hours of trekking, we returned to Bhira Village. Dressed in dry clothes, we listened to sweet music in the car, reminiscing about the wonderful experience of Devkund Waterfall as we began our journey back to Pune. This was our first trekking experience in this monsoon season.

But it was just the beginning; we knew we would soon encounter rivers, waterfalls, forests, and mountains again. We cannot stay away from you for too long and will be back soon. This journey is not going to pause for long because the monsoon is not going to stop anytime soon.
