Coorg is also famously called the “Scotland of India” due to its similar climate, landscapes, and coffee plantations. Our journey to this stunning region was more than just a getaway; it was an immersive adventure into a land rich with culture, history, and breathtaking natural beauty. Known for its expansive coffee plantations, mist-laden hills, and vibrant wildlife, Coorg offers a tranquil escape from the fast-paced city life.

Our exploration began in Madikeri, the vibrant heart of Coorg. This charming hill town is celebrated for its captivating landscapes and rich cultural tapestry. With its cool climate and verdant surroundings, Madikeri invites visitors to unwind and soak in the serene atmosphere. The town’s unique blend of history and natural beauty provides a perfect backdrop for discovering the wonders of Coorg.

We visited Coorg in the beginning of December, and the weather was chilly with a gentle drizzle adding to the charm. The cold climate made the whole experience feel fresh, cozy, and unforgettable. In the following sections, I’ll share more about Coorg’s beautiful places, each with its own wonders and adventures. Whether you’re interested in serene landscapes, rich culture, or delicious cuisine, Coorg has something special for every traveler.

➥Raja’s Seat Garden
Raja’s Seat is a beautiful garden located in Madikeri, Coorg, Karnataka. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the region, known for its vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and breathtaking views. The name “Raja’s Seat” means “Seat of the King” because it was once a favorite spot of the kings of Kodagu, who came here to relax and enjoy the sunset.

The garden is filled with colorful flowers and ornamental plants, creating a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. When we visited, it was drizzling slightly, which made the garden even more beautiful and fresh. The panoramic view of the valley from the viewpoint is simply stunning.

There are also fun animal statues like dinosaurs, rhinos, and peacocks, which make it exciting for children. It’s a perfect place for a family outing, with plenty of photo spots and space to walk around. We enjoyed our visit very much!

➥Coffee Planation
During our visit to Coorg, we explored a stunning coffee plantation nestled in the hills, surrounded by lush greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. The plantation was dense and beautifully maintained, with both Arabica and Robusta coffee plants growing in abundance.

Alongside the coffee, we discovered colorful ornamental plants and a variety of spice plants like black pepper, cardamom, clove, and cinnamon, adding rich aromas to the fresh air. A watchtower stood tall within the plantation, offering a panoramic view of the scenic hills covered in vibrant green.

We also visited an on-site cafe where we tasted different types of freshly brewed coffee, each with a unique flavor. Inside the plantation, there was a small shopping complex where we observed the coffee bean processing and spice drying methods.

We bought aromatic coffee beans, spices, and a special bird’s eye chilly pickle. The light drizzle made the whole experience even more magical. It was truly a fantastic visit!

➥Dubare Elephant Camp
The next day of our Coorg trip, we visited the famous Dubare Elephant Camp, a must-visit place for animal and nature lovers. The journey to the camp was adventurous, as the road passed through a dense forest filled with greenery and the sounds of birds. To reach the camp, we had to cross the Kaveri River by speed boat. Due to the recent rain, the river’s flow was strong, making the crossing quite thrilling. This place is also known for river rafting, adding to the excitement.

Once we crossed over, we reached the Dubare Elephant Camp, where we witnessed something truly fascinating—some elephants playfully interacting with each other, gently locking their tusks as if in a friendly tussle. It looked like a mix of affection and playful competition, a beautiful display of their bond and strength.

One of the best parts of the experience was watching the elephants bathe in the Kaveri River—it was peaceful and heartwarming. Visitors can also take part in feeding and bathing the elephants, which makes the visit even more special. The cool December weather and light drizzle made everything even more enjoyable.

➥Nisargdhama
After Dubare Elephant Camp, we visited Nisargadhama, a beautiful nature park located near the banks of the Kaveri River. The first thrill began as we crossed a suspension bridge made of iron ropes.

It swayed with every step, and with the river flowing below, the experience was exciting and adventurous. Inside Nisargadhama, we were welcomed by lush greenery, tall trees, and a peaceful bamboo garden that added to the charm.

The park is home to a small zoo where we saw a herd of friendly deer. Throughout the park, beautifully crafted statues showcased the traditional dances, tribal culture, and lifestyle of local communities—bringing their heritage to life. For adventure lovers, activities like skywalking, ziplining, and river crossing added extra fun.

The bird park was our favorite part, filled with colorful birds like parrots, emus, ostriches, peacocks, lovebirds, and more. Taking photos with parrots—and especially with an iguana—was thrilling! Near the entrance, many food stalls offered tasty local snacks. Nisargadhama is truly a fun-filled, family-friendly, and must-visit destination!

➥Namdroling Monastery  Golden Temple
The last stop of our day was the stunning Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple. Located in Bylakuppe, near Coorg, this Tibetan monastery was a surprising and beautiful discovery. We had seen monasteries in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh before, but we didn’t expect such a grand and peaceful monastery in Karnataka. The moment we entered, we were amazed by the beauty and calmness of the place.

The entrance of Namdroling Monastery is a grand four-story tower, decorated with colorful artwork and a golden wheel that displays Buddhist symbols. Inside, the main prayer hall is home to three magnificent golden statues—Lord Buddha in the center, with Lord Amitayus and Lord Padmasambhava on either side. Visitors can offer prayers, meditate, and spin the mani prayer drums, which is believed to bring the same blessings as chanting the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum.”

Built in 1963 by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche, this monastery is one of the largest teaching centers of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. The peaceful atmosphere, artistic walls, and spiritual vibe make it a must-visit place for anyone visiting Coorg. We sat in the main prayer hall for a while, soaking in the calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Madikeri Museum is a unique and beautiful place to visit in Coorg, offering a blend of history, culture, and architecture. What makes it truly special is that it is housed inside an old British-era church, giving it a charming and historic feel. The museum showcases a wide collection of artifacts, weapons, paintings, and sculptures that tell the story of Coorg and Karnataka’s rich past.

As we walked through the museum, we learned about the local kings, warriors, and the brave Kodava community. There are also interesting exhibits related to Tipu Sultan, British rule, and traditional Coorgi life. One of the highlights was the display of ancient weaponry and traditional clothing used by the Kodava people. The peaceful surroundings, combined with the heritage building and informative displays, make Madikeri Museum a great spot for history lovers. It’s a wonderful place to explore and understand the cultural roots of Coorg and Karnataka.

➥Madikeri Fort
Madikeri Fort is another fascinating historical site in Coorg, located very close to the Government Museum. Originally built in the 17th century by Mudduraja, the fort has seen several renovations over time, including major work done by Tipu Sultan, who later named it Jaffarabad. The British also made structural changes and added a Gothic-style Anglican Church within the fort complex, which now houses the Madikeri Museum.

The fort is made of stone and features majestic walls, arches, and two elephant statues at the entrance, which add to its charm. As we explored the fort, we came across secret passages, watchtowers, and remnants of the palace, offering a glimpse into the region’s royal past. The elevated location provides scenic views of Madikeri town and the surrounding hills. Visiting Madikeri Fort is like walking through pages of history. Its architecture, heritage, and peaceful surroundings make it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Coorg.

Visiting Coorg was a truly unforgettable experience. We enjoyed every minute of our trip, from exploring lush coffee plantations to witnessing the rich culture, wildlife, and serene beauty of this hill station. Each place we visited—Dubare Elephant Camp, Namdroling Monastery, Nisargadhama, Madikeri Fort, and the Museum—offered something unique and memorable. Coorg has even more gems to explore like Abbey Falls, Talacauvery, Raja’s Tomb, and Chelavara Falls, which we hope to visit next time.

After spending some peaceful and joyful days in Coorg, we continued our journey towards Mangalore. On the way out of Madikeri, we were delighted to see vast stretches of rubber plantations and tall betel nut trees—a refreshing sight that added a perfect final touch to our Coorg adventure. This trip was a perfect mix of nature, culture, and relaxation, and Coorg has certainly left a lasting impression on our hearts.
