Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is a prominent and beautiful tourist destination in the state of Kerala. Renowned worldwide for its stunning backwaters, houseboats, beaches, football lovers and cultural heritage, Alleppey is often referred to as the ‘Venice of the East’ due to its network of waterways, canals, and backwaters. I had always wished to visit Alleppey, and my desire was finally fulfilled during our trip to Kerala.
One of the main attractions of Alleppey is its beach, which offers mesmerizing views of the sunrise and sunset. Another significant highlight of Alleppey is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held annually in the month of August on Punnamada Lake.
This event attracts tourists from across the globe. Additionally, the local markets, traditional handicrafts, and delicious Kerala cuisine also draw visitors to this charming town.
My trip to Alleppey was truly wonderful and memorable. I am sharing my travel experiences here to provide you with insights about Alleppey:
➥The Stunning Backwaters of Alleppey
If a list of incomparable places based on natural beauty were to be made, Alleppey would certainly be included. Alleppey attracts tourists from all over the world with its stunning backwaters, which flow through lush paddy fields, coconut groves, and small villages.
Experiencing the beauty of these backwaters while aboard a houseboat is an experience that is hard to put into words. The coconut trees lining the shores add a magical charm to their beauty.
The tranquil and picturesque environment of the backwaters provides peace and freshness to your soul. During your journey through the backwaters, you can observe various types of birds, aquatic life, and the local lifestyle. Watching the lifestyle of the local people, who primarily rely on fishing and paddy farming, up close is a unique experience.
Additionally, the small villages and their residents along the backwaters keep the heritage and traditions of this region alive. Their simple and humble way of life is sure to leave an impression on you. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring these backwaters.
➥Alleppey Houseboats
While I have experienced staying in houseboats on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir, there are some fundamental differences between the houseboats of Dal Lake and those in Alleppey. The houseboats on Dal Lake remain stationary and do not cruise around the lake, whereas the houseboats in Alleppey navigate through the backwaters, offering you a moving tour.
The houseboats in Alleppey, locally known as ‘Kettuvallam,’ are equipped with all the amenities of a luxurious hotel. These houseboats are made of wood and bamboo and reflect the traditional architecture of Kerala.
The houseboats in Alleppey feature luxurious bedrooms, a kitchen, and excellent seating arrangements on the deck, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the backwaters to the fullest. While cruising on these houseboats, you can have your favorite dishes prepared and savor them.
From noon to evening, the houseboats cruise through the backwaters and a bit into the sea, after which they are anchored at a designated spot near a village for the night. In the morning, the houseboats set off again to explore the backwaters. Staying on these houseboats was indeed a magnificent experience.
➥Marari Beach
Marari Beach is a beautiful and serene seaside destination, renowned for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. Located about 11 kilometers from Alleppey on the way to Kochi, it is a popular spot among tourists. The name “Marari Beach” is derived from the nearby village of ‘Mararikulam’.
Marari Beach is known for its white sand, clear waters, and lush green coconut trees. The atmosphere here is extremely peaceful and relaxing, making it ideal place away from the hustle and bustle.
You can enjoy the stunning views of the sunrise and sunset at Marari Beach. Swimming in the clean and calm waters here was a delightful experience. Drinking fresh coconut water added to the enjoyment.
➥Mararikulam Shiva Temple
Located just a short distance from Marari Beach, the Mararikulam Shiva Temple is an ancient and renowned religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s architecture is in traditional Kerala style, featuring intricately carved doors, pillars, and roofs. The grand entrance and the serene and tranquil atmosphere inside the temple are truly captivating.
The temple courtyard resonates with the soft and melodious sounds of religious chants, creating a deeply spiritual ambiance. Mararikulam Shiva Temple is a unique blend of faith, peace, and cultural heritage. If you are visiting Alleppey, a trip to this sacred site is a must.
➥Saint Andrew’s Basilica
Saint Andrew’s Basilica, located in Alleppey, is a prominent and sacred Christian religious site. This church holds not only religious significance but is also known for its unique architecture and historical importance. Built in the 16th century by Portuguese missionaries, Saint Andrew’s Basilica continues to be a major pilgrimage destination for followers of Christianity.
The architecture of Saint Andrew’s Basilica is unique and grand. Constructed in Gothic style, it features tall pillars, intricately carved doors, and stained glass windows.
The interior of the church is adorned with a magnificent altar and beautiful paintings, enhancing its religious sanctity and purity. The architecture here is not only of religious importance but also serves as an attraction for art lovers.
